As a result of the internet I think audiences have a stronger power to some extent than they used to but also the industries have some power due to producing whereas audience really controls the sales and viewing rates of the media product. In my opinion the internet definitely makes the audience way more powerful than 20 years ago.  1) A preferred reading of a text is the mindset the producers want you to take away from the piece of media that they are showcasing to you. 2) The oppositional reading is the mindset the producers don't want you to take away from the piece of media, basically the opposite of a preferred reading.
