Assesment Questions
1) What is a convention of a magazine cover? Give an example from Tatler. [2 marks]
For this specific magazine, it is the cover line that says 'Millennial Sloanes, Their habits, codes and mating practices'
2) How does the front cover of Tatler use media language to appeal to its target audience? [6 marks]
Tatler uses Serif Font which has a very luxurious look so it links with the magazine. Tatler also uses the phrase 'The one month gap year, you won't sleep much but it will be fun' which creates a kind of cliffhanger for the readers so they come back to the next post and read that too. Also, the name 'Tatler' sounds unique and complicated which also could link with the readers of the magazine.
The magazine is popular as it has a picture of a famous woman which attracts a lot of readers. Another thing Tatler does well is the colour scheme which is green, green connotes nature, minty freshness. This links because the magazine was published in spring. There is also gold which represent luxury and Lots of money. And pink connotes a mostly feminine colour (stereotypically). This describes the readers as being rich and mostly female.
3) How does the front cover of Reveal magazine represent female celebrities? [12 marks]
When Tatler uses the phrase 'stuff the diet' they could potentially be telling the celebrities to forget about the internets beauty standards, this represents the female celebrities as them trying to fit into what the media has expected from them but Reveal is telling celebrities to be themselves. And that not all women are thinking about their appearance all the time
However, they decided to include the quote 'we haven't had sex...yet' in my opinion, this tells me that Reveal is trying to represent women to be all about the idea of when you have a relationship the best thing for women are sex which is a negative way to think about women especially celebrities. This represents the female celebs negatively.
They also show two celebs who are pregnant which is a negative thing for me because I feel like they are trying to make women feel like they NEED to be a mother which is wrong in my opinion. This creates another stereotype that isn't technically fair because then the media will start to attack people because of the stereotypical view.
