Represent NHS Advert
1) What does BAME stand for?
Black and minority ethnic
2) Why is there a need for blood in the BAME community?
Because only 3% of black and minority ethnic people donate blood and the NHS needs more for patients.
3) What does this advert want people to do once they've seen it (the 'call to action')?
It wants people from the BAME community to donate blood as a gift for patients.
4) Why is the advert called 'Represent'?
So the people who donate can represent their community.
5) Why have the producers chosen famous BAME celebrities to feature in the advert? Give an example of three well-known people who appear in the advert and why they are famous - make sure you write their names and spell them accurately.
First there is Lady Leshurr who is the rapper in the video, We also have Kanya King who is the founder and CEO of MOBO and we also have Nicola Adams the olympic gold medal boxer you see subverting stereotypes in the video.
6) What are the connotations of the slow-paced long shot of empty chairs at the end of the advert?
It tells us those are the most important part in the video and the producers want the audience to focus on them deeply so they will donate blood, also it links to the 3% of people who donate and also if people don't donate the patients will die that's why the chairs are empty.
7) How does the advert match the key conventions of a typical urban music video?
They are shooting in the city and there is a scene where lady leshurr is on a parking rooftop also there are a lot of greys and green and beige colours.
8) How does the advert subvert stereotypes? Give three examples (e.g. ethnicity, masculinity, femininity, age, class, disability/ability etc.)
We see a black female scientist which subverts feminine stereotypes and also ethnicity stereotypes al;so there is a female boxer who subverts the feminine stereotypes and there is the olympic wheelchair basketball player who subverts the disability stereotypes.
9) How does the advert reinforce certain stereotypes of the BAME community? Could there be an oppositional reading where some audiences would find this advert offensive or reinforcing negative stereotypes?
One oppositional reading is that they chose the genre of Grime and Rap to represent the BAME community which could be offensive to some people in the BAME community.
10) Choose one key scene from the advert and write an analysis of the connotations of camera shots and mise-en-scene (CLAMPS).
I choose the scene where they focus on the three empty chairs, i think the reason the chairs are empty i chose this because the empty chairs connote the 3% of people that did donate and also that there arent enough of poeple to fill the chairs.
