1) Who is the target audience for Doctor Who? Has it changed since 1963?

12-65 year olds, in 1963 males were more of a target audience however now the woman audience has grown by 22%

2) What audience psycho-graphic groups might particularly enjoy Doctor Who?

Main streamers, reformers and explorers because of the sci-fi

3) What audience pleasures are offered by An Unearthly Child? Apply Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory to the episode. Make sure you provide specific examples from the episode to support your ideas.

Personal Identity:

High school setting, pop music, rebellion in the TARDIS.

Personal Relationships:

Cliffhanger, worried about the teachers, doctor seems like the villian.

Diversion (Escapism):

Sci-fi genre, mystery, crime, future.

Surveillance (Information / Facts):

Space, technology, science and history 

4) What additional Uses and Gratifications would this episode provide to a modern 2020 audience?

Teach us about history too and personal identity because of the high school settings.

5) Thinking of the 3Vs audience pleasures (Visceral, Vicarious and Voyeuristic pleasures), which of these can be applied to An Unearthly Child?

voyeuristic pleasure because you see the doctor and Susan arguing which you wouldn't see.

1) What was the television industry like in 1963? How many channels were there?

There were only 2 channels including BBC and ITV and no multi-channels or catch ups.

2) Why is Doctor Who such an important franchise for the BBC? 

It basically funds BBC because of the merchandise and the whole 60 years of the show, because it has such a strong fandom that are loyal t the show.

3) How does Doctor Who meet the BBC's mission statement to 'inform, educate and entertain'?

It educates the audience because of the science fiction and history included, and it entertains by using visceral pleasures and voyeuristic pleasures.

4) How is the BBC funded?

By the TV license and merchandise sold.

5) Who regulates the BBC and what is the watershed?

OfCOM regulates the BBC and the watershed is 9pm UK time which means BBC cannot stream anything inappropriate before 9pm to protect the children.
