Class: Industry and Audience

 Industries

1) What was the objective of BBC3 when it was launched? You can find the answer in the notes above.

To produce a good tv show for young adults to watch and be entertained and also for whovians to watch.

2) Why did BBC3 go online-only in February 2016?

The budget was cut by £100 million and had to be cut as a channel and turned into an online streaming service.

3) How does Class meet the BBC's mission statement to 'inform, educate and entertain'?

Class definitely meets the statement to entertain but not so much the other two, it meets the entertain part because its a horror sci fi teen genre show that is entertaining but it doesn't have any lessons or education parts.

4) How did the distribution of Class contribute to the failure of the show with audiences?

The first teaser for the show had a lot of doctor who in it which may of lead the audience to think it was another show with doctor who in it whereas the show only has a few scenes with doctor who.

5) What advertising and marketing was used to try and promote Class to an audience? Why do you think this wasn't very successful?

Lots of episode teasers, it wasn't successful because a lot of doctor who was in the teasers and also the show was shown after the watershed and lots of people dont watch after late night so it wouldn't get a lot of views.

Audience

1) What were the viewing figures for Class and why do you think it did so badly? Look at the notes above to find out the answers.

It

2) What audience psychographic groups might particularly enjoy Class? You can revise Pyschographics here.

Ages from 16-34, middle class, both female and male, people interested in sci-fi, horror and doctor who. Explorers would like it because there is a lot of mystery.

3) What audience pleasures are offered by Class - Co-owner of a Lonely Heart? Apply Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory to the episode. Make sure you provide specific examples from the episode to support your ideas.

Personal Identity:

The school setting gives the audience a feeling of familiarity because they would remember or be in  school while watching so they could sympathise with the situations.

Personal Relationships:

The audience would want to find out what happens to Aprils heart and what happens with Ram and his football career after getting his leg chopped off.

Diversion (Escapism):

The things that happen in the show wouldn't happen in real life so it gives the audience a time to leave the real world and get sucked into the world of class.

Surveillance (Information / Facts):

i dont have anything to say for this.

4) Thinking of the 3 Vs audience pleasures (Visceral, Vicarious and Voyeuristic pleasures), which of these can be applied to Class - Co-owner of a Lonely Heart?

Visceral pleasure from the action in the show, when the shadow kin comes to fight.

5) How did fans in the 'Whoniverse' (also known as 'Whovians') react to Class? Watch the fan reaction video (and read the YouTube comments) embedded above or check the comments in the extension articles below to help with this.

Comparison: Doctor Who , Class

1) How are the technical conventions different between 1963 Doctor Who and 2016 Class (e.g. camerawork, editing, sound and mise-en-scene)?

The camera quality is definitely different because there are more modern cameras now and the editing is way better, all the effects look more realistic, of course the actors are improving (when the TARDIS started to take of in an unearthly child the acting was tremendously bad).

2) What similarities and differences are there between An Unearthly Child and Co-owner of a Lonely Heart in terms of the science-fiction genre?

Of course the biggest similarity is the doctor showing up, the school is the same and the settings are mostly the same, there are monsters/creatures.

3) What similarities and differences are there between An Unearthly Child and Co-owner of a Lonely Heart in terms of how they meet the BBC's remit to inform, educate and entertain?

Doctor who actually has some historical context and facts to INFORM the audience and of course it entertains whereas class doesn't inform or educate but does ENTERTAIN a lot.

4) How are representations of people, places and groups similar or different in the two shows?

The high school/academy is the same, there are teenagers and teachers like an unearthly child, but now that its more modern the diversity has improved 100% with other races and sexualities and gender stereotypes being subverted.

5) What similarities and differences can you find in terms of the audience pleasures for An Unearthly Child and Co-owner of a Lonely Heart?
