Co-owner of a lonely heart: Analysis

 Language and close-textual analysis

1) Write an NCIS analysis for the episode - using notes from the screening in class. Make specific, detailed reference to moments in the text using media terminology (e.g. media language - camera shots and movement, editing, diegetic/non-diegetic sound, mise-en-scene etc.)

Co-owner of a Lonely Heart

Narrative:

The shadow kin king fights to get his heart back, hurting the main character, she uses his powers for the better and heals her mum allowing her to walk, at the end of the ep she goes into a portal to the shadow kin dimension.

Character:

The main character seems very strong because shes fighting the shadow kin king while also trying to understand her father who got out of jail.

Iconography:

During the whole episode there are connotations of the sci-fi genre because of the appearing swords in her hands but also the flower creatures that are feeding on blood and meat which obviously doesn't exist in the real world which is an example of vicarious pleasure.

Setting:

The episode is set mostly in the school and home of the main character, linking to the teen genre.

2) How does Todorov's theory of equilibrium apply to Co-owner of a Lonely Heart? Try and use the expanded version of Todorov's theory: Equilibrium - Disruption - Recognition - Reparation - New equilibrium. You can find reminder notes on all these narrative theories here - just scroll down to narrative.

equilibrium is that they're all going to school on a normal day, the disruption is when the shadow kin king takes over her body and the reparation is when she uses his powers to fix her mums legs to allow her to walk.

3) Applying Propp's character theory, what character roles do each of the main characters in Class fit into? Alternatively, you may wish to discuss how characters do not fit Propp's character types.

April is the princess but also the hero at times, Ram is the hero, Aprils dad is the villain, Korakinus is also the villain, Tanya is their helper, Quill and Charlie are also helpers/ Heroes.

4) What enigma and action codes (Barthes) can you find in Co-owner of a Lonely Heart? Make specific, detailed reference to the text using media terminology (e.g. media language - camera shots, diegetic/non-diegetic sound, mise-en-scene etc.)

At the end of the episode there is a next time montage which gives off enigma codes making the audience want to watch more.
