1) Research: Science Fiction / Fantasy TV drama endings
Watch the following Science Fiction TV drama clips and write an NCIS analysis of each one.
Clip 1: Class Episode 4
Narrative: How is drama created? How is the story communicated to the audience? How is the story line resolved?
Drama is created when April starts getting taken over by Corakinus and attacks her dad. The story line of the episode is resolved by April going into the portal and trying to find Corakinus, but also she heals her mothers paralysis using her new found powers.
Character: How do the characters appeal to the audience? Can you apply Propp's character theory to any of the characters in this extract? Do the characters reinforce or subvert stereotypes?
April's mother subverts the usual stereotype that disabled people are weak and always need assistance, she does this by still being a strong and commanding mother while being disabled. Mateusz and Charlie's relationship subverts the traditional stereotype of homosexual relationships.
Iconography: Study the mise-en-scene (CLAMPS). How does the mise-en-scene communicate the narrative and Science Fiction/Fantasy genres?
When Aprils body is taken over you can see her eyes glow an orange colour, this communicates to the audience that shes not herself anymore and that something is going to happen. When the Portal is made the editors use CGI to communicate the sci-fi genre.
Setting: How does the setting fit the Science Fiction/Fantasy genre? What audience pleasures might the setting provide for the audience? Think about Blumler and Katz Uses and Gratifications theory e.g. personal identity.
The setting provides personal identity for the audience because its set in a garden and it allows the audience to relate with the characters and feel how they would in that setting, it shows the audience that the characters are real people.
THE 100:
Narrative: an experiment leaves the main character stranded
Iconography: Makeup and SFX used to give a medieval feel.
Character: MC is a strong woman who is isolated.
Setting: Forest, fields, woods,
Stranger things:
Narrative: Eleven has to kill the Demogorgon to save the world and her friends.
Character: MC is a strong independent girl with telekinesis powers strong enough to kill aliens because her father put her in a lab.
Iconography: Makeup blood coming from the nose suggests she gets hurt when she uses powers, using the props like slingshots and enhancing the sound of it can create tension.
Setting: Classroom, School.
TV DRAMA CLIP:
Title: Paranoia
Log line – one sentence that sums up the plot of your TV drama and hooks people in: A girl or boy will be looking for a lost pendant they had which contains an unknown substance, whilst searching an anonymous caller phones them and suggests that they hide because they're in great danger. Some creature shows up and the person goes in hiding, however an unfortunate call decides their fate.
Other characters (at least one) and their audience appeal:
Anonymous caller, MC and creature
Other successful TV dramas are similar to yours:
none that i can think of as its an original idea
Narrative – what is the main story line in your TV drama:
MC is searching for a lost item but goes in hiding as a unidentified 'dangerous' creature shows up..
Narrative resolution – what will happen in your ending scene? What will the audience learn about the characters or narrative?
At the end of the episode the Creature will find the MC whilst holding/wearing the pendant they were searching for.
Information about the two locations that you are using and why you have chosen them:
Not sure where yet a scene outside for the anonymous caller, and a scene in a house to show the hiding and searching.
Information about the main character e.g character type (hero/heroine) their desires, the conflicts they encounter etc.:
The MC is the hero looking to find a missing pendant, one conflict as i stated before is that an unidentified creatures shows up looking for the pendant too.
Costume/props that you require for filming:
Casual clothes i have at home for the MC and Anonymous caller, I can DIY a costume for the creature and also do Makeup.
How you are aiming your product at the specified target audience of teenagers and young adults: The MC will be a young adult/teenager and lots of young adults would relate to the 'dilemma' of losing things and not being able to find the item. The show is sci-fi and fantasy as it includes an alien/creature that is unearthly.
STATEMENT OF INTENT (DRAFT)
The title of my show is Paranoia, the narrative is that the MC is in search for a special pendant they had lost when an unidentified creature shows up looking for it as well, the creature find the MC whilst the creature has the pendant and the MC would realise they know the creature. My clip would most likely appear at the end of episode 1 because it starts a story of Who the alien is? or how they're related? and whats going to happen later??
Meeting the brief
I will have 2 different locations being a field and a house where my scenes will take place. Right now i have 3 characters the Hero, The Alien and the anonymous caller. I plan to have a variety of camera shots one of them being a close on the MCs phone as it rings and vibrates and then switching to the MCs shocked face because they're in a situation where they shouldn't make any noise. I will have non-diagetic sound like a electricity wave sound in the POV of the creature coming up to the MC and of course there will be diagetic sound like the phone vibrating and ringing. I will have the narrative resolution which will be that the creature is related somehow to the MC and OF COURSE the MC finds the pendant with the creature.
I will show that the genre is clearly sci-fi by having green/ blue lighting and creature makeup, also the sound effects. My MC will subvert stereotypes because they will be related to an alien.
Audience (psycho-graphics & demographics
My audience will be 13-25 , both male and female, middle class and wll enjoy shows like stranger things, the 100, Vampire diaries, and other sci-fi/ fantasy shows too. I'm targeting this specific audience by having an alien in my clip and the characters would be more relatable because the MC is a young adult/ teen and middle class.
