One direction: Industries + Audience

 Industry

1) How were One Direction formed and how is this reflected in the music video for History?

One direction was formed in X factor by simon cowells choice and this is reflected by the music video by the flashback clips.

2) What is vertical integration? You may need to check your book for this (or remind yourself from this Year 1 blogpost.)

Verticle integration is when a conglomerate owns alot of subsidaries which are not the same genre as eachother.

3) What is horizontal integration? (See link above for help again!)

When a conglomerate owns a lot of subsidaries in the same genre.

4) How has technological convergence changed the way audiences consume music videos?

Now we can use youtube and spotify etc. and stream songs online by downlaoding it onto one technological product.

5) As a manufactured band, what influence do Simon Cowell and the record company Syco (part of Sony) have over the content and release strategy of One Direction music videos? You may want to read this text from an article in The Inquisitr about the relationship between 1D and Simon Cowell.

Having simon as the record owner shows that Syco and Simon have a lot of power and cntrol over what 1D releases and how they look publicly.

Audience

1) What is the One Direction target audience - demographics and psychographics?

Demo- Teen-30s girls, Mostly white, etc.

Psycho- Mainstremers, Middle class (all classes), etc.

2) What audience pleasures are offered by the music video for History?

Personal relshionships with the band members.

Personal identity because of being a fan for so long.

3) Pick out three particular shots, scenes or moments in the video that would particularly appeal to One Direction fans. Why did you choose those moments?

The X factor scene - Nostalgia

The concert audience scene - Personal identity

The lst scene when they cry on stage and wave goodbye- End of an era for fans.

4) What is nostalgia and why is it a key audience pleasure for the History music video?

Nostalgia is a feeling you get when looking back and remembering good memories, This is a main audience pleasure in 'History' because the MV contains a lot of flashbacks and past memories.

5) How are fans positioned to respond to the video? What do the producers want One Direction fans to take from the video?

Fans would respond with love but also sadness because it is an offical goodbye and thank you to everyone who supported one direction.
